If I could have a pound for every time someone queried the value of outsourcing social media marketing to a specialist agency, I wouldn’t be sat here today doing social media for other people. It sometimes seems to me that lots of businesses, while never knowingly underselling their own professional services, are quite happy to question the price that a professional social media marketing agency would charge to promote said services.
“Half the money I spend on advertising is wasted; the trouble is I don’t know which half.” John Wanamaker (1838-1922)
How much would you pay to have someone else do your social media marketing for you and your business?
The truth is that I come across people who don’t see the value in using a social media marketing agency almost on a daily basis. Some will never see the value and some will see it after some gentle explaining or worse – after a costly exercise in trying to do something on the cheap! I try not to get too involved in other peoples’ perceptions of value.
But here are three good reasons why you might want to fork out for a social media marketing agency to take on your brand’s social media marketing.
Time.
It’s not endless and often it’s better spent elsewhere. I’m not a plumber and if I have a leaky pipe, I could save money and do it myself. It would probably take me ten times as long and still not be right, and in that couple of hours a plumber takes to fix it, I could have earned the money to pay them with the skills that I already have. It’s a no-brainer really.
Commitment.
Time really does run away with you when you have a business to run. Yes you might be able to do a good job of your own social media marketing, but when you get to 5pm on a Friday, or bedtime on a Sunday, or whenever your working week officially ends and you’ve made no updates, or not answered those messages that came in, and you have no plans in place to do anything on Facebook or Twitter or whatever this coming week, then are they really going to get done at all? I venture that it’s probably a no.
Skills.
You might have all the best ideas about how to use social media to engage with your audience. I do not doubt this for one second – business owners usually understand their own audience better and have some cracking ideas for us to use – but do you have the technical skills to get it into the right format, in the right place, at the right time? And do you have the time to learn how to do this? Again, a plumber is more adept than me at using the right tools on that leaky pipe. I have no intention of learning one end of a wrench from another.
Most clients that come our way here at Social Bods come to us with a mix of all three – time, commitment, and skills. We don’t profess to know their businesses better than they do, because we don’t. But we do know that we have the skills and the time and the commitment to make sure it gets done properly.
